Information on insured physician and hospital services

Insured physician services

An insured service is one provided by a licensed medical practitioner and considered essential to the health of the patient. The Health Care Insurance Services plan is designed to pay for the cost of general practitioners’ and medical specialists’ services that are medically required. These services include:

  • Physicians’ services in their office, clinic, at the hospital, scene of an accident or in a patient’s home
  • Care and treatment by a physician before, during and after an operation, including anaesthesia
  • Physicians’ care during pregnancy
  • Certain dental-surgical procedures that have to be performed in an approved hospital

Non insured physician services

The following services are not insured physician services:

  • Services provided by optometrists and dispensing opticians, including provision of eyeglasses
  • Appliances (eg. Braces and walkers), except for some medical appliances needed by children aged 16 year or younger
  • Services provided by podiatrists, osteopaths, orthodontists and chiropractors
  • Medical examinations not required for health reasons or those requested by a third party (eg. Employment medicals)
  • Plastic and cosmetic surgery unless the plan gives prior approval
  • Dental surgery performed outside a hospital
  • Advice by telephone
  • Long-distance telephone charges incurred in the course of arranging referrals
  • Preparation of records, reports or certificates
  • Laboratory or x-ray procedures performed in facilities not approved by the Plan
  • Giving or writing prescriptions
  • Supply or drugs
  • Any service that the administrator determines, during review, is not insured because it is not medically required.

Insured Hospital Services

The Hospital Insurance Services Plan is designed to pay the cost of most medically required hospital services. The following in-patient and out-patient services are insured when administered at an approved facility:

  • Accommodation and meals at standard ward rates
  • Necessary nursing services
  • Laboratory, radiological and other diagnostic procedures
  • Drugs, biologicals and related preparations when administered in a hospital
  • Use of operating room, case room and anaesthetic facilities including equipment and supplies
  • Radiotherapy services where available
  • Physiotherapy services where available
  • Services provided by hospital staff
  • Emergency and non-emergency out-patient services 

Non insured hospital services

The following services are not insured hospital services:

  • Special nurses requested by patient or family
  • Preferred accommodation (semi-private or private)
  • Crutches and other such appliances
  • Drugs for outside the hospital
  • Dental procedures except where there has been prior approval given, and where the patient must be admitted to hospital
  • Nursing home services
