Pertussis is an extremely contagious infection of the respiratory system. It’s common in Canada, and hard to get rid of. There are frequent outbreaks, including one that began in the summer of 2012 in Yukon. Pertussis usually continues to circulate in the affected community for about a year. Pertussis is most dangerous for pregnant women and babies under one year.

Wildfire Smoke

A hot and dry Yukon summer can result in wildfires and poor air quality due to smoke. Wildfire smoke is a complex mixture of particles and gasses, which include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds and both coarse and fine particles often invisible to the eye.

Whitehorse has some of the cleanest air compared to cities across Canada; however, an air quality study showed four of nine Whitehorse neighbourhoods monitored in a recent study had high levels of air pollution during cold winter months when trapped air can sit low in the valley.
